  • Taught master classes focusing on a range of specific areas.

  • Low cost of £60 per 3hr block.

  • Normally no more than 15 people to ensure everyone can hear and see what's happening.

  • Minimal focus on technical aspects with core focus being on taking a better photograph.

  • The level of the master class will be aimed at bringing everyone up to a competent ability to progress on their own or through further tuition.

  • Areas covered include starting with a new camera, learning how to compose a better photograph and working with low (to very low!) light.

  • City centre, city outskirts, local museums and parks, picturesque towns, remote landscapes and many more locations possible.

Along with my general tuition sessions, I also provide taught master classes covering specific areas. These typically have the format of having a technique explained to you, with examples where appropriate, before asking you to take a few photographs using the knowledge you've gained with a brief critique of your efforts before moving on to the next aspect.

Due to the varying nature of the master classes I offer, the length of time they last and the cost may vary. There may also be specific requirements on the equipment I expect you to be able to have. Finally, not all the master classes are suitable for everyone as the level of experience required to get the most out of them will vary. All these points will be made clear in the details of the specific master class.

I will be developing and adding more master classes, so it would be worth signing up to the mailing list to ensure you find out about them as they are launched. If you have any specific ideas for a master class you would like to see me develop, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Photography tuition mailing list
All booking of tuition is handled via the mailing list. The process is simple: sign up to the mailing list using the link below and enter as much information as you can as it helps me plan what tuition to offer. Every few weeks I will send an email containing full details of the upcoming tuition sessions. To book a place, reply to the email (quickly!) and tell me which session you would like a place on. If you have already purchased blocks of tuition, I will update your file - if you do not have any pre-purchased blocks, I will contact you to arrange payment while holding your place on the session.

First steps with your camera
Strictly speaking this is not a masterclass, but as the format is the same it still belongs in this section. This is aimed at anyone who has recently started photography or bought a new, more advanced, camera and wants to know how to get more out of it. It doesn't matter a jot whether you've bought a cheap compact camera in a sale or an advanced DSLR, this is the place to start. A natural progression from this course would be a few sessions of Photography Tuition to develop the basic skills you will learn and start taking photographs you can be proud of.
There will be a maximum of 15 people on any session of this course.
Time: Approximately 3 hours.
Cost: £60 per person.

Composition
I consider composition of the scene to be far and away the most important aspect of photography. You can take a perfect technical photograph - but end up with an image you still find rather uninteresting. Or you can take a well composed photograph - and forgive some of the technical problems because it still looks good. This is not to say that being technically proficient is something to avoid, but I find that if you are taking photographs you genuinely like, you are more likely to build your technical ability as you will spend more time taking photographs!
There will be a maximum of 15 people on any session of this course.
Time: Approximately 3 hours.
Cost: £60 per person.

Low light photography
This course will help you gain the skills required to take good photographs in low light. This includes night photography as well as early morning and dusk - or simply indoors where a flash is not suitable. This course will show you how to use a tripod to stabilise your camera - why a remote release really does matter - how to use ISO, shutter speed and aperture control to good effect - how to "guess" composition - tricks and tips to cheat when you don't have the right equipment to hand!
There will be a maximum of 15 people on any session of this course.
Equipment: You can take part on this course with any reasonable compact camera (contact me with your make and model to check if it's suitable), but it is essential that you have a tripod. If you do not already own a tripod and are unable to borrow one for the course, please contact me before buying one - not all tripods are equal and many fairly cheap tripods are barely better than hand holding!
Time: Approximately 3 hours.
Cost: £60 per person.
